Budget adjustment - college to adult life

Page history last edited by Holly Swyers 6 years, 5 months ago

What advice do you have for young people switching from a college student budget to adult spending?

The transition from college life to adulthood is even more challenging then the transition from high school life to college life. How you spend your money and what you spend your money on is hard thing to figure out. Usually a college student’s budget is based around what you want, while an adults budget is more about what you need and what you want.

Savings Account

Before you start switching from a college student budget to adult spending you should try to prepare by putting some money aside as an emergency or savings account. That will usually be used early on in an individual’s adult spending years. Isaac Davies said, “Saving is big. Things can happen, so making sure you’re saving for any risk is important.”  Saving is the most important advice to someone when making the transition into adult spending.

Tracking and budgeting your money

A lot of college students don’t take the time to budget out their money, so when transitioning to adulthood spending they spend more then they should, and sometimes on things they don’t need, which results to debt. Bonnie Bellow's advice was that, "there are plenty of different ways to budget your money such as; get an app, and make sure to have savings account or an emergency account.Having structure to the way you spend your money is key to follow when trying to track your money.
